The capital city, which shares the state's name, is the largest municipality by population.

The geography of San Luis Potosí is defined by a variety of distinct landscapes. Much of the state lies on the Mexican Plateau. This area is relatively level and features low, wooded mountain ridges. The Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range runs north to south through the state. This range acts as a barrier between the high plateau and the Gulf Coastal Plain to the east. In the eastern part of the state, the land drops into the tropical valley of the Tampaon River. This river flows northwest until it becomes the Pánuco River. This river forms the border between San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas. The eastern quarter of the state is known as the Huasteca potosina. This region is part of La Huasteca, a cultural and geographical area along the Gulf of Mexico.

Climate and vegetation change significantly across these different zones. The high plateau has a mostly temperate climate due to its elevation. The northern and central parts of the state sit in an interior drainage basin. This means these waters do not flow directly to the sea. In contrast, the southern half receives more rainfall from the Nortes, which are weather systems that bring significant rain. The eastern portion sits on the Gulf Coastal Plain and contains Veracruz moist forests. The Sierra Madre Oriental is home to pine-oak forests. In the low tropical valleys, the environment is much wetter. The soil in these areas is fertile and supports various types of agriculture.

The history of the region began with indigenous groups long before Spanish arrival. The territory once contained parts of the Mesoamerica and Aridoamerica cultural areas. The Otomi and Chichimeca tribes lived in the northern and western-central areas. These groups were nomadic hunter-gatherers. Following Spanish colonization, many indigenous people died, but Huasteco, Pame, and Náhua peoples still live in the state today. In 1592, miners discovered gold and silver deposits. This discovery led to the establishment of the state. Spanish miners built the first town, called San Luis de Mezquitique. The state was named "San Luis Rey" after King Louis IX of France. It was also given the name "Potosí" to compare its wealth to the famous silver mines in Potosí, Bolivia.

San Luis Potosí has played a major role in Mexican history through various conflicts. After Mexico gained independence in 1821, the state declared its own independence. The first state constitution was written on October 16, 1826. During the Mexican–American War from 1846 to 1847, the state earned the name "San Luis de la Patria." This name honors the leaders and ideas the state contributed to the struggle against the United States. During the French Intervention in 1863, the city of San Luis Potosí became the capital of Mexico under President Benito Juárez. In 1866, a telegraph line opened between the state and Mexico City. This connection helped the state begin its industrialization.

The economy of the state is driven by several important sectors. Mining has traditionally been the main engine of industry. The state is a leader in metallurgy, which is the science of extracting metals from ore. Miners extract zinc, copper, lead, gold, silver, mercury, manganese, and arsenic. The Real de Catorce area contains some of the richest silver mines in the country. In the Ramos district, the Cocinera lode yielded over $60,000,000 in the first decade of the 20th century. Other major industries include chemicals, foods, beverages, tobacco, and textiles. The services sector contributes 21% to the state's income. Commerce, hotels, and restaurants contribute another 18%. Agriculture also remains important, employing about 20% of the population.

Environmental and cultural conservation is a significant modern issue. The state has several protected areas managed by the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas. These include El Potosí National Park and the Sierra del Abra Tanchipa Biosphere Reserve. Some areas are also sacred to the Huichol people. The mountain of Wirikuta is a vital site for Huichol ceremonies and the deer dance. UNESCO has recognized Wirikuta as a protected area due to its cultural importance and unique species. However, there are conflicts regarding mining in these areas. Companies have sought to use open pit mining and cyanide leaching in protected lands. Open pit mining removes entire landscapes, and cyanide is a highly lethal substance. The Huichol people continue to work to protect their sacred lands and culture.
