Geography in Querétaro is very diverse. The state sits across three major geographic zones. The Mesa del Centro is in the center-west. It consists of small mesas above sea level. The Sierra Madre Oriental is in the northeast. This area has rugged topography with mountain chains and narrow valleys. The Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt covers about half of the state. This belt is mostly made of volcanic rock. It creates peaks and valleys throughout the center and south.

Scientists and travelers divide the state into five specific regions. The Sierra Gorda is in the north. It is part of the Sierra Madre Oriental. It covers 3,789 square kilometers, or 32.2% of the state. This area is part of the Huasteco Karst subprovince. It features rugged mountains and steep valleys made of limestone. The climate here varies wildly. It ranges from near desert conditions to tropical rainforests.

Because of its many ecosystems, the Sierra Gorda is very special. It was made a biosphere reserve in 1997. This is called the Reserva de la Biosfera de la Sierra Gorda. In 2001, UNESCO registered the area with its Man and the Biosphere Programme. The federal agency manages this protected land.

Another major region is the Semidesierto Queretano. This is a wide strip that crosses the state from east to west. It covers 3,415.6 square kilometers, or 29% of the state. This area is very dry. The Sierra Madre Oriental blocks moist air from the Gulf. This creates a rain shadow effect. The landscape is relatively rugged. You will find municipalities like Peñamiller and Tolimán here.

History shows that many people shaped this land. Long ago, Querétaro was on the edge of Mesoamerica. The Purépecha and Aztec Empires had influence in the south. However, they did not fully dominate the area. Small city-states lived in the Sierra Gorda. By the time the Spanish arrived, these groups were independent. They lived in small farming villages or were seminomadic.

The Spanish conquest focused on Santiago de Querétaro. This helped the city grow into a major center. Today, the state is home to 2,368,467 people as of 2020. The population has grown significantly since 1900. Many people move here for industry and low crime. Some families move from northern border states to find safety. This has caused growth in private universities.

Culture in Querétaro is not the same everywhere. There is a distinction between mountain and valley life. The Otomi are the most important indigenous group. The Pame people also live in the mountain regions. Most of the population is Catholic. However, small numbers are Protestant or Evangelical. This mix of people and land makes Querétaro unique.
