The geography of Zacatecas is defined by high altitudes and rugged terrain. The average altitude of the state is 2,230 meters above sea level. The capital city sits even higher at 2,496 meters. The land is split into three main geographical regions. These are the Sierra Madre Occidental in the west, the Mexican Plateau, and the Sierra Madre Oriental. Most of the territory is within the Sierra Madre Occidental. This area features highly rugged peaks that rise over 2,500 meters. In contrast, the mountains in the northeast and southeast are lower. These areas contain large valleys, such as the Juchipila and Tlaltenango valleys.

Mineral wealth is deeply tied to the specific mountain chains in the region. A small mountain chain called the Sierra de Fresnillo sits in the center of the state. This chain is a major source of the state's minerals. In the extreme northwest, the Sierra de Sombrerete is another important chain. It is marked by a mountain named Sombreretillo, which also provides significant mineral wealth. The Sierra de Órganos is another notable chain located near the Sierra de Sombrerete. These geological features have made mining a primary economic activity for Zacatecas.

The climate in Zacatecas is mostly cool and dry. About 75% of the state is classified as arid or semi-arid. The average annual temperature is 16°C, making much of the state temperate. Most of the rainfall, averaging 400mm per year, occurs during the summer months between June and September. The warmest month is June, while the coldest months are from November to January. During these cold months, frost is not uncommon. The northeast is the coldest and driest part of the state. This region is known as the Salado because it contains saltwater lakes.

Water management is vital because no major rivers run through the state. Most waterways only flow during the rainy season. Zacatecas is part of two distinct water basins. The southeast belongs to the Lerma River basin, which empties into the Pacific Ocean. Rivers in this basin include the San Pedro, Juchipila, Jerez, and Tlaltenango. The second basin is smaller and endorheic, meaning it does not empty into any ocean. To manage water, the state has eighty dams with a total capacity of 595,337 million cubic meters. Much of the water is underground and is accessed via 5,800 wells.

The history of Zacatecas is closely linked to its silver deposits. The name Zacatecas comes from the Nahuatl word for "where there is abundant zacate" (grass). Before Spanish arrival, groups like the Caxcans, Zacatecos, and Guachichils lived there. Large settlements like La Quemada were part of Greater Mesoamerica between the fourth and tenth centuries. In 1546, Juan de Tolosa founded Zacatecas city after discovering a rich silver vein. This discovery led to a massive silver boom. By the early 18th century, the state produced one-fifth of the world's silver. This wealth allowed for the construction of elegant mansions and churches.

Conflict and revolution have also shaped the state's identity. During the Mexican Revolution, a decisive battle called the Toma de Zacatecas took place. Francisco Villa's troops fought Victoriano Huerta's forces outside the capital. This battle resulted in 7,000 deaths and 5,000 injuries. Because of this event, the city is known as a "Ciudad Heroica," or Heroic City. Today, the state's economy relies on mining, agriculture, and tourism. In 1993, UNESCO recognized the historic center of Zacatecas as a World Heritage Site.

Ecosystems in Zacatecas vary based on soil, temperature, and relief. Arid regions are often dominated by various species of cactus. In the southern areas, deciduous trees lose their leaves during winter and spring. Common trees throughout the state include mesquite, ironwood, and palo verde. In high-altitude areas near the Jalisco border, you can find mixed forests of pine and holm oak. One unique plant found in the state is the elephant tree, or Bursera microphylla. The northern part of the state sits on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert. This makes the area ecologically diverse and home to many different species.
