It sits near many other states like Durango and Coahuila. The capital city is also named Zacatecas. The name comes from a Nahuatl word. It means "where there is abundant zacate," or grass. This state is very important because of its silver and its history.

The land in Zacatecas is very varied and rugged. Most of the state sits in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. These mountains have high peaks over 2,500 meters tall.

Later, Spanish explorers arrived in the area. Juan de Tolosa helped found Zacatecas city in 1546. He did this after finding one of the richest silver veins in the world. This discovery changed the history of the region forever.

Silver has always been a huge part of life here. In the early 1700s, the state produced one-fifth of all the silver in the world. This wealth helped build beautiful churches and large mansions.

The state also saw big battles during the Mexican Revolution. One famous fight was the Toma de Zacatecas. This battle was very large and involved many soldiers. Because of this history, the capital is called a "Heroic City." In 1993, UNESCO named the historic center a World Heritage Site.

Today, many people live in Zacatecas. As of 2020, there were over 1.6 million people living there. Most people live in cities like Fresnillo and Guadalupe.
