The city acts as a major hub for information technology and large data centers. It also supports significant logistics services and call centers. Manufacturing is a massive part of the local economy, specifically in aircraft maintenance and production.

Other vital sectors include the automotive industry, machinery production, and the manufacturing of chemicals and food products. This industrial strength has led to high levels of migration from other parts of the country.

Querétaro is also a significant center for agriculture and specialized production. The surrounding region features rapidly growing vineyards. This area produces a large amount of wine, making it the second-largest wine producer in Mexico after Baja California. The famous Spanish wine producer, Freixenet, operates in the state.

The city's economic success is reflected in its wealth. The Querétaro metropolitan area has a per capita GDP of US$20,000. This figure is the second highest among all Mexican metropolitan areas, trailing only Monterrey.

The history of the region began long before Spanish arrival. Mesoamerican groups settled the area around AD 200.

Later, the Otomi people became the primary inhabitants. They were sedentary urban dwellers with sophisticated political systems. By the 1440s, the area was under the Otomi dominion of Xilotepeque. This dominion was eventually subject to the Aztec Empire. The Aztecs used the area as a bulwark against the Chichimeca lands to the north.

The Spanish foundation of the city is tied to a specific historical event. On July 25, 1531, Hernán Pérez Bocanegra y Córdoba arrived at the site. He was accompanied by Conín, an Otomi leader who later became known as Hernando de Tapia.

At the time, Spanish and Nahuan allies were fighting local Otomi and Chichimeca groups at a sacred hill called Ynlotepeque. During this battle, a total solar eclipse occurred.

Chronicles suggest the Chichimeca were winning until the eclipse happened. The Spanish claimed to see a vision of Saint James riding a white horse. This event led to the Chichimeca surrender and gave the city its name, Santiago de Querétaro.

During the colonial era, the city grew into a vital religious and administrative center. Various religious orders established themselves, including the Franciscans, Jesuits, Augustinians, Dominicans, and Carmelites.

By the 18th century, the city was known as the "Pearl of the Bajío." Because many early buildings were lost to violence, most surviving historic structures are built in the Baroque style.

When the Conspiracy of 1810 was discovered, she managed to send a warning to Miguel Hidalgo. This warning helped him begin the armed struggle. Although the city was one of the last to fall to the insurgents, its role in the revolution remains a defining part of its identity. After the war, the city officially became the capital of the state of Querétaro in 1823.
