You can also find the subtropical Yungas jungle. This area is green and wet compared to the dry parts. Other places are desert-like, such as the Salinas Grandes salt mines. The Río Grande river cuts through a deep canyon called the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Life in Jujuy has changed many times over many years. Long ago, people like the Omaguacas and Ocloyas lived here. They farmed the land and kept animals like the guanaco. These groups built stone fortresses called pucarás to protect their villages. One famous example is the Pucará de Tilcara. Later, the Incas conquered these people during their expansion. In the late 1500s, Spanish explorers arrived in the area. The name Jujuy comes from a word used for Inca governors. In 1593, a small settlement was started in the Jujuy valley. This settlement grew into the city of San Salvador de Jujuy.

The history of the province also includes many difficult times. During the wars for independence, Jujuy saw many battles. A leader named General Manuel Belgrano led a massive evacuation. This was called the Jujuy Exodus, where people had to leave their homes. After these struggles, the province became its own independent area in 1834. It separated from the provinces of Tucumán and Salta. Later, the economy began to grow in new ways. At the end of the 1800s, people started growing sugarcane. By the early 1900s, a railway connected the province to Buenos Aires and Bolivia.

Today, Jujuy has many different ways to make a living. Mining is a very important job in the region. The province is part of the "Lithium Triangle" with Bolivia and Chile. This area holds more than half of the world's lithium supply. People also mine salt from the Salinas Grandes basin. Agriculture is another big part of life. Sugarcane is the main crop and makes up 30% of Argentina's sugar. People also grow tobacco, beans, citrus, and tomatoes. Many people raise llamas and goats for their soft wool.
