The land in Salta changes depending on how high you are. In the east, the mountains catch wet winds from the ocean. This creates a thick, green jungle called the Yungas.

In the middle, there are valleys where people live and farm. Further west, the land becomes a high, flat plateau called the Altiplano.

This high area is cool and dry. Some parts even have large salt flats. The weather can be very different from one spot to another.

Long ago, many different native groups lived in these valleys. The Diaguitas and Calchaquíes lived there before the Spanish arrived. They spoke a language called Cacán.

Later, Spanish explorers like Diego de Almagro visited the area. In 1582, a man named Hernando de Lerma founded the city of San Felipe de Lerma. This city was soon renamed San Felipe de Salta. Over many years, the borders of the province changed as new provinces were made.

Today, people in Salta do many different jobs. Farming is very important for the local economy. They grow sugar cane, tobacco, and many fruits like bananas and tomatoes.

In the Valles Calchaquíes, people grow grapes to make famous wines. Mining is also a big part of life. Workers find silver and uranium in the ground. The province also uses gas and petroleum from deep underground. These resources are sent to other parts of Argentina through long pipes.

Many travelers visit Salta to see its amazing sights. The capital city is nicknamed "La Linda," which means "The Beautiful."
