Aztec architecture is a grand style of building. It was made by the Aztec people in Mexico. These buildings show the power of their empire. They also show what the people believed. Most big buildings were in the center of cities.

The Aztecs used their buildings to share their worldview. This helped bring different groups into one empire. Their art was full of meaning and skill.

Builders used many clever ways to make things stand. They used stone for the bases of temples. In marshy areas, they used hundreds of support piles. This helped big buildings like the Templo Mayor stay steady.

They also built aqueducts to bring fresh water to cities. Some people even made chinampas, which are floating gardens. These gardens helped them grow food on the water. They used gravity to move water through the city too.

This style grew from many older cultures. The Aztecs were influenced by the Toltec and Tepanec people. They also learned from the Acolhua of Tetzcoco. Early Aztec pyramids looked like older Mesoamerican styles.

As the empire grew, the architecture changed. The Aztecs often built new temples over old ones. This created pyramids with four or five layers. It made the buildings even larger and more detailed.

Many buildings had special shapes and symbols. Temples were called teocalli, or pyramid-temples. Most were rectangular with steep stairs. Some were circular for the wind god, Ehecatl.

They used colors to show directions. The north was black for the god Tezcatlipoca. The south was blue for the sun god, Huitzilopochtli. They also used animal symbols like eagles and serpents.

Different people lived in different types of homes. Rich leaders lived in large palaces called tecpans. These had big courtyards for the community.

Most regular houses were simple and made of adobe brick. People of lower classes lived further from the city center. The size of a home showed a person's wealth. Even ball courts for the game ullamaliztli were important parts of the city.
