Aztec mythology is a huge collection of stories from the Aztec people. They lived in central Mexico long ago. These stories helped them explain the world around them. Many of their beliefs were similar to other groups in Mesoamerica. The Aztecs were part of a group called the Mexica. They traveled from a place in the north known as Aztlan. Some stories say they came from a place called Chicomoztoc. This was known as the place of the seven caves.

Legend says the Mexica were guided by their war god, Huitzilopochtli. They looked for a sign to build their home. They saw an eagle on a cactus holding a snake. This vision told them to build their city on that spot. They built a great island city called Tenochtitlan. This city was located in Lake Texcoco. Today, this area is the heart of Mexico City. You can even see this vision on the Coat of Arms of Mexico.

There are many different myths about how the world began. One famous story is called the Five Suns. It says four great ages happened before our current world. Each of those ages ended with a big disaster. The Aztecs believed our age is the fifth creation. This age began in the ancient city of Teotihuacan. To start the sun, the gods had to sacrifice themselves. A humble god named Nanahuatl jumped into a bright fire. His brave act set the sun in motion. This allowed time and history to truly begin.

Aztec gods had many different jobs and powers. They were often shown using special symbols and icons. For example, Tlaloc was the god of rain and thunder. He was a god of fertility. Chalchiuhtlicue was the goddess of running water and lakes. Quetzalcoatl was a lord of the winds and wisdom. Mictlantecuhtli was the ruler of the Underworld, called Mictlan.

Each god represented a specific part of nature or life.

These gods were often linked to the directions of the world. Huitzilopochtli was the ruler of the South. Quetzalcoatl was the lord of the West. Tezcatlipoca ruled the North as the lord of the night. Xipe-Totec was the lord of the East. Some gods were even linked to the stars and planets. For instance, Xolotl was linked to the planet Venus. These many beliefs helped the Aztecs understand their place in the universe.
