Mixcoatl was a very important god in ancient Mesoamerican cultures. His name means "cloud serpent" in the local languages. Many people saw him as the god of the hunt and war. He was also linked to the stars and the Milky Way. Some groups, like the Otomi and Chichimecs, held him as a patron deity. In places like Huejotzingo and Tlaxcala, he was known as Camaxtli.

Mixcoatl had a very specific way of looking in art. He was often shown wearing a black mask. His body had red and white stripes painted on it. He looked similar to the god Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli. However, you could tell them apart by their tools. Mixcoatl always carried hunting gear. This included a bow, arrows, and a basket for carrying game.

Many stories explain where Mixcoatl came from. He was one of four children born to Tonacatecutli and Cihuacoatl. Tonacatecutli was a creator god known as the "Lord of Sustenance." Some stories say Mixcoatl was a part of the god Tezcatlipoca. In one tale, Tezcatlipoca turned into Mixcoatl to bring fire to people. He did this by revolving the heavens. Mixcoatl was also thought to be the father of Quetzalcoatl.

Mixcoatl is also connected to many other gods and groups. He was the father of 400 sons called the Centzon Huitznahua. These sons were involved in a story with their sister, Coyolxauhqui. He was also related to 400 more gods called the Centzon Mimixcoa. Some stories say he slew these gods in an ambush. In other tales, he created people by striking a cane on a rock. These stories help explain how the world and its people began.

People had special ways to honor Mixcoatl in their daily lives. A month in the Aztec calendar was dedicated to him. This was the 14th month, called Quecholli. During this time, people went hunting and feasting in the countryside. Hunters would even dress up to look like Mixcoatl. They would start new fires to roast the animals they caught. Today, his name lives on in science. It is the name of a crater on the moon Io. It is also used for species of salamanders and vipers in Mexico.
