Many people saw him as the god of the hunt and war. He was also linked to the stars and the Milky Way. Some groups called him Camaxtli.

Mixcoatl had a very distinct look. He often wore a black mask. His body had red and white stripes painted on it. He carried hunting gear like a bow and arrows. He also used a net to carry game.

There are many stories about him. One story says he helped bring fire to humans. Another story says he was the father of Quetzalcoatl. He was also the father of 400 sons. These sons were called the Centzon Huitznahua.

Hunters had special ways to honor him. They had a month for him in their calendar. During this time, they went hunting and feasting. Hunters would even dress up like Mixcoatl. They would make a new fire to cook their food. Today, his name is used for things like a crater on a moon and types of snakes.
