Some thinkers believe he is linked to a god named Xiuhtecuhtli. Xiuhtecuhtli is a god of fire. However, they look very different. Xiuhtecuhtli is often shown as a strong young man. Huehueteotl is shown as an old or tired being. He often has a beard. During the feast of Izcalli, boys did special tasks. They hunted small animals in swamps. They found snakes, lizards, and frogs. They gave these to elders. The elders were the guardians of the fire god. The boys received a reward of corn dough called tamales. In some stories, the Aztecs made sacrifices to this god. They used fire and blood to show respect. This helped them gain the favor of the god.
