La Malinche was a very important woman in history. She lived during a time of great change in Mexico.

She is best known for helping the Spanish leader Hernán Cortés. She acted as an interpreter, an advisor, and a bridge between different groups. This means she helped people who spoke different languages understand each other. Because of her help, she played a major role in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. Her life shows how much power language can have during times of conflict.

Her work was a complex chain of words.

When the Spanish met new people, they often could not talk to them. For example, Cortés would speak Spanish to another man named Jerónimo de Aguilar. Aguilar would then translate those words into Yucatec Maya. Malinche would listen to the Maya and translate it into Nahuatl. This allowed the Spanish to communicate with the Nahua people. Sometimes the chain was even longer if they met the Totonac people. It is a wonder that they could communicate at all through so many steps.

Malinche was likely born around 1500 near the Mexican Gulf Coast.

Some records suggest she was born in a place called Olutla. She may have come from a noble family with high status. This is likely because she knew how to speak a very formal type of Nahuatl. This special way of speaking is called courtly language. Sadly, she was sold or kidnapped into slavery when she was a young girl. She was later given to the Spaniards in 1519 as one of twenty enslaved women.

Many facts about her life are still being studied by historians.

Malinche had a son named Martín with Cortés. He was one of the first Mestizos, which means he had both Spanish and Indigenous American roots. Her name has many different versions in history. The Nahua people called her Malintzin. The Spaniards often called her Marina after she was baptized in the Catholic Church. Some people also called her "the tongue" because she was such a good interpreter.

Today, people have many different feelings about La Malinche.

In Mexico, her reputation has changed many times over the centuries. Some people see her as a person who betrayed her own people. This is why the word "malinchista" is sometimes used for someone who is disloyal. Other people see her as a victim who was just trying to survive. Some even view her as a symbolic mother of the new Mexican people. She remains a powerful icon that people still talk about today.
