Frida Kahlo was a famous Mexican painter known for her many portraits.

She often painted self-portraits, which are pictures of herself. Her art used a folk art style inspired by the culture of Mexico. These paintings explored big ideas like identity, race, and gender. She also mixed real life with fantasy in her work. Many people see her art as a way to show the female experience. Her painting called "The Dream (The Bed)" sold for $54.7 million at an auction. This makes it the most expensive work by a female artist ever sold.

Her mother gave her a special easel so she could paint while lying down. Her father lent her oil paints to use. She even placed a mirror above her so she could see her own face. She said she painted herself because she was often alone. This was the subject she knew best.

While in Detroit, she tried new ways of making art. She used a style called retablos, which are small religious paintings on metal sheets. She also experimented with etching and frescos, which are paintings made on walls. During these years, her art began to show more themes of suffering and pain. She used her art to express what she was going through.

Her talent soon reached people all over the world. In 1938, she had a successful solo show at a gallery in New York.

A man named André Breton called her a surrealist, which is an art style that uses dream-like ideas. Later, she traveled to Paris in 1939. Even though she had some trouble with her show there, the Louvre museum bought her painting "The Frame." This made her the first Mexican artist to be part of that famous museum's collection. She also taught art at a school called La Esmeralda. She worked hard to share her skills with others.

Today, Frida Kahlo is remembered as a very important icon.
