The Wounded Deer

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Wounded Deer is a small oil painting by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

She created this work in 1946, near the end of her life. The painting is also called The Little Deer. Kahlo used her art to share her deep physical and emotional suffering. She wanted her audience to see her pain. This painting shows her many different beliefs and influences. It is a very personal self-portrait.

In the painting, Kahlo appears as a hybrid of human and animal.

She has a deer's body and antlers on her head. The deer stands in a forest with nine trees on the right.

Nine arrows pierce the deer's body, and blood flows from them. A broken branch lies on the ground in the front. A bright bolt of lightning strikes from a white cloud in the back. The deer's face looks calm and strong despite the wounds.

Kahlo's life was marked by many hard times. When she was 18, a bus accident injured her entire body. Her spine, ribs, pelvis, and abdomen were all damaged. Later, she had surgery on her spine and was bedridden for a year. She even had to have her right leg amputated due to gangrene. Her marriage to the artist Diego Rivera also brought emotional pain. They married for a second time in 1940, but had many arguments.

Many symbols in the painting come from different cultures.

Kahlo used ideas from pre-Columbian, Buddhist, and Christian traditions. The number nine appears many times in the work. There are nine arrows, nine trees, and nine points on the antlers. In the Aztec calendar, Kahlo was born on day nine. The arrows might also remind people of the story of Saint Sebastian. She even wrote the word "carma" in the bottom corner.

This painting helps us understand how Kahlo saw herself.

She used the deer to represent her own body and struggles. The deer's raised leg might show her own difficulty walking. Some think the mix of male and female features shows her sexuality. Her use of different symbols shows her complex identity. The painting is quite small, measuring only 22.4 by 30 centimeters. It was given to her friends, Arcady and Lina Boytler, as a wedding gift.
