Before he was emperor, Cuauhtémoc learned to be a leader and a warrior. He went to a special school called a calmecac. This was a school for elite boys. He also served in the military. In 1515, he became the ruler of Tlatelolco. His title there was cuauhtlatoani, which means "eagle ruler." To be a leader, he had to be a high-born man. He also had to be a warrior who could capture enemies.

Cuauhtémoc took power during a very hard time. He was about 25 years old when he became the tlatoani, or emperor.

Cuauhtémoc was a cousin to the former emperor, Moctezuma II. He married an Aztec princess who was also a daughter of Moctezuma II.

Cuauhtémoc fought hard to defend his city for eighty days. He asked other groups for help, but many stayed away. Only the Tlatelolcas stayed loyal to him. On August 13, 1521, he was captured while crossing Lake Texcoco. He was fleeing with his family and friends.
