He was the tenth emperor, or Huey Tlatoani, of the Mexica Empire. This leader was born around the year 1476. He was the eleventh son of a ruler named Axayacatl. Cuitláhuac was also the brother of the famous emperor Moctezuma II. He was known as a very experienced warrior. He was also a wise adviser to his brother.

Cuitláhuac had many roles in his life. He was an adviser who warned Moctezuma about the Spanish. He told the emperor not to let the Spaniards enter the city. However, the Spanish leader Hernán Cortés imprisoned both brothers. Cuitláhuac was later released under a pretense. The Spanish said they wanted to reopen the market for food. This happened while the Spanish and their allies were in the city.

His time as emperor was very short. After the Spanish fled the city, Cuitláhuac was elected on June 30, 1520. He served as the Huey Tlatoani for only 80 days. During this time, he led the resistance against the Spanish and Tlaxcalteca. This was a hard job for the Aztec people. Some sources say he was already serving as leader before Moctezuma died.

There are many facts about his family and his end. Cuitláhuac was married to Moctezuma's eldest daughter. Her name was Isabel Moctezuma. He may have died from smallpox in the year 1520. Smallpox was a disease brought by an African person on a Spanish expedition. Early records do not say exactly how he died. After he passed away, a man named Cuauhtémoc became the next ruler.

Today, many things are named to honor this leader. A municipality in Veracruz is called Cuitláhuac. There is also a Metro station in Mexico City with his name. You can find an avenue in Mexico City named after him too. Even the stars hold his memory. An asteroid named 2275 Cuitláhuac travels through space. He remains a famous part of history.
