Cuitláhuac was a significant leader of the Aztec city known as Tenochtitlan. He served as the tenth Huey Tlatoani, which is the title for the emperor of the Mexica Empire. His reign occurred during the year Two Flint, which is 1520 in the modern calendar. Although his time as ruler was very brief, he is a vital figure in history. He is best known for leading the resistance against Spanish and Tlaxcalteca forces. This resistance followed the death of his kinsman and brother, Moctezuma II.

Cuitláhuac was born around the year 1476. He was the eleventh son of the ruler Axayacatl. His family history was deeply tied to leadership in the region. His mother's father was also named Cuitláhuac and had ruled the area of Iztapalapa. The younger Cuitláhuac also held rule in Iztapalapa for a time. He was a highly experienced warrior within the empire. He also served as a close adviser to his brother, Moctezuma II.

Before he became emperor, Cuitláhuac played a role in the early interactions with Spanish explorers. He warned Moctezuma II not to allow the Spaniards to enter the city of Tenochtitlan. However, the Spanish leader Hernán Cortés imprisoned both Moctezuma II and Cuitláhuac. Cortés eventually left the city to meet a Spanish force sent by Diego Velasquez. Velasquez was the Spanish governor of Cuba. While Cortés was away, a massacre of Aztec elites occurred. Following this event, the Mexica people besieged the Spanish and their indigenous allies.

Cuitláhuac was released from prison under a specific pretense. The Spanish claimed they needed to reopen the market to obtain food for the invaders. During this period of conflict, Moctezuma II was stoned to death. This happened after the former emperor tried to tell his people to withdraw from the battle. After the Spanish and their allies fled from Tenochtitlan on June 30, 1520, Cuitláhuac was elected as the new tlatoani. Some historical sources suggest he may have been serving in this leadership role even before Moctezuma II died.

Cuitláhuac's reign as the tenth Huey Tlatoani lasted for only 80 days. His short time in power was marked by the struggle to defend the empire. He may have died from smallpox during this period in 1520. Smallpox is a disease that had been introduced to the New World. It was brought by an African person who was part of Pánfilo de Narváez's expedition. This expedition had been sent to capture Cortés. However, early historical sources do not explicitly state exactly how he died.

Family connections also defined Cuitláhuac's life within the Aztec nobility. He was ritually married to the eldest daughter of Moctezuma II. At the time, she was a girl of ten or eleven years old. She later became known as Isabel Moctezuma. The transition of power after Cuitláhuac's death was very rapid. Immediately following his passing, a man named Cuauhtémoc was made the next tlatoani. This sequence of leaders shows the intense pressure placed on the empire during the conquest.

The legacy of Cuitláhuac continues to be recognized in many modern ways. In Mexico, a municipality in Veracruz is named Cuitláhuac in his honor. The Mexico City Metro also features a station called Metro Cuitláhuac. You can find an Avenue in Mexico City named Cuitláhuac, which is part of an inner ring. This avenue runs from Avenue Insurgentes to Avenue Mexico-Tacuba. His name is also used for many streets in various Mexican towns and villages. Even in space, his name is preserved through the asteroid 2275 Cuitláhuac.
