Manuel Lozada was a powerful and controversial caudillo in 19th-century Mexico. A caudillo is a local leader who holds significant political or military influence. Lozada is often remembered as a complex figure in Latin American history. Some viewed him as a dangerous bandit, while others saw him as a champion for indigenous people. He was born in 1828 in the Tepic Territory. His life spanned a period of intense political change and war.

Lozada's early life was shaped by hard work and family responsibility. He was of Mestizo descent and was also a member of the Cora tribe. His father, Norberto Garcia, died when Lozada was a very young child. His mother, Cecilia González, could not support him alone. His uncle, José María Lozada, adopted him and gave him his surname. As a boy, Lozada worked on a family farm tending to animals. He attended a parochial school for a time. However, he had to leave elementary school to help earn money for his many relatives.

As an adult, Lozada's life moved toward conflict and rebellion. One legend says he worked as a cowboy on the Cicero Blanca hacienda. He became involved with the daughter of the farm owner, Maria Dolores. They eloped, which led to Lozada being arrested and sent to the Tepic jail. After his release, he sought Maria Dolores again and was imprisoned once more. He was eventually freed after his mother pleaded for him. Following this, he fled to the Sierra de Alica mountains.

Lozada earned the nickname "The Tiger of Álica" through a violent act of defiance. A soldier named Simón Mireles publicly whipped Lozada in a town square. This act angered Lozada and a group of discontented Cora natives. In response, Lozada found and executed the soldier. This event marked his rise as a bandit and insurgent in the Tepic region. He became a prominent figure during local disputes between 1855 and 1856. Later, he allied with the Rivas family to move beyond simple banditry.

During the 1860s, Lozada played a major role in the Second French Intervention. This was a period when French forces attempted to establish an empire in Mexico. Lozada allied with the French from 1865 to 1866. He supplied 3,000 men to the Imperial Army. For this service, French generals gave him cash. Emperor Maximilian I also named him a general. The Emperor created the province of San José de Nayarit and made Tepic its capital.

Lozada's political loyalties shifted as the political landscape changed. When the French Empire began to fall apart, Lozada switched sides. In 1866, he defected to support the Mexican Republic. He publicly declared his allegiance to the leader Benito Juárez. To help manage the region, Juárez separated Tepic from the state of Jalisco. This created a new federal jurisdiction. For a time, Lozada held strong control over the area with the tacit protection of the government.

His downfall began after the death of Benito Juárez in 1872. The new successor, Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada, moved against Lozada. Lozada responded by raising an army of approximately 10,000 men. He used this force to invade central Jalisco. However, he was eventually betrayed by two of his own lieutenants. He was captured while bathing in a mountain stream at Loma de los Metates. Because he was declared a bandit, his legal rights were suspended. He was executed on July 19, 1873.

Lozada left a lasting impact on the history of Mexico. He is considered a precursor to the agrarian reform movement. This movement focused on the rights of farmers to own land. His actions also helped lead to the eventual creation of the state of Nayarit. Today, monuments stand in his honor in Tepic and in his birthplace, San Luis de Lozada. His life remains a study of how local leaders shaped the larger destiny of a nation.
