He was born in 1485 in a town called Badajoz. His father was named Gómez de Alvarado and his mother was Leonor de Contreras. Pedro had a twin sister named Sarra and several brothers. He traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to reach the Americas. He arrived there around the year 1510 or 1511. This was a time when many people were moving to the New World.

Alvarado was known for many different things. He was a very skilled military leader and a brave soldier. Some people thought he was very handsome and charming. The Aztecs even gave him a special nickname. They called him Tonatiuh, which means "Sun" or "child of the Sun." They gave him this name because he had blond hair. They also used it because he had a very quick and angry temper.

His life was full of many dangerous adventures. He first worked with a man named Hernán Cortés. They helped conquer Cuba together in 1511. Later, Alvarado joined an expedition to explore the Yucatán Peninsula. He captained a ship named the San Sebastián during a trip in 1518. During this trip, he sailed up the Papaloapan River. This river was later named the Río de Alvarado because of him. He also helped lead the conquest of the Aztec Empire.

Even though he was a strong soldier, Alvarado was a difficult person. Many people thought he was very greedy and cruel. He was often accused of being too violent toward native people. He was also known to be harsh toward other Spaniards. He did not care much about rules or taxes. Instead, he mostly cared about war and finding new things. He was a poor governor because he did not try to make things stable.

Alvarado spent much of his time in Central America. He helped bring places like Guatemala and Honduras under Spanish control. He also spent time in El Salvador and parts of Nicaragua. His life ended in a very sudden way in 1541. While he was trying to stop a revolt in Mexico, a horse crushed him. He died just a few days after his accident. His story is a big part of the history of the Americas.
