The national flag of Mexico is a beautiful tricolour. It has three vertical stripes of green, white, and red.

In the middle of the white stripe sits the Mexican coat of arms. This emblem tells a very old story about the Aztec people. It shows a golden eagle perched on a cactus. The eagle is devouring a serpent in its claws.

This image comes from a legend about finding a home. The Aztecs looked for a sign to build their city, Tenochtitlan. Tenochtitlan is the place we now call Mexico City.

Creating the flag was a long and changing process. Many different groups used different flags during the War of Independence. Some rebels used a standard of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Others used flags with blue and white colors.

The first time the modern green, white, and red colors appeared was with the Army of the Three Guarantees. This group helped win independence from Spain. These colors are also the colors of the Mexican national army. The flag helps people feel connected to their history and their land.

History shows us how the flag design grew over time. In November 1821, Agustín de Iturbide decreed the first national flag.

This first version was used officially in July 1822. Later, in 1823, a new flag was chosen for the republic. The eagle lost its crown during this time. A serpent was also added to the eagle's right talon. People even added oak and laurel branches to the design. These changes happened as the government changed from an empire to a republic.

There were many versions of the flag in the years that followed. During the Second Mexican Empire, the flag changed its shape.

Emperor Maximilian ordered a design that looked a bit like French imperial arms. He added four eagles with crowns to the corners. The current version of the flag is a newer adaptation. It was first approved by President Venustiano Carranza in 1916. He changed the eagle so it faces the side instead of the front. The version we use today was officially adopted in 1968.

During ceremonies, civilians perform a special salute. They stand tall and place their right hand over their heart. The palm of the hand faces the ground. This is called the "civil salute." The flag is also flown at half-mast to honor important people who have died. It is a symbol that brings the people of Mexico together.
