The flag has three vertical stripes. It uses two colors: green and white. The green stripes stand for agriculture. This means the farming that happens in the land. The white stripe stands for peace and unity. These colors help show what the nation values.

To pick a flag, the government held a big contest. This happened in 1958 to prepare for independence. A national planning committee set up the competition. They wanted a design that everyone could be proud of. Almost 3,000 people sent in their own designs. It was a huge effort from many different people. This helped the whole country join in the process.

A man named Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi won the contest. He won in 1959 after his design was chosen. His original idea had a red quarter sun. This sun had 16 rays on the white stripe. The committee decided to remove the red sun later. This left the simple green and white design we see now. Akinkunmi's work became the symbol for the whole nation.

The new flag became official on October 1, 1960. This was the day Nigeria gained independence. A soldier named Lieutenant David Ejoor raised it for the first time. This was part of a special ceremony. Before this, there were different flags for the land. One old flag had a blue field and a red disc. Lord Lugard helped design a flag for the protectorate in 1914.

Flags are important tools for showing a country's identity. The Nigerian flag connects the people to their history. It shows their hope for peace and farming. The President also has a special standard. It has a red field and a green shield. The shield shows a wavy "Y" shape. This shape represents the Niger and Benue Rivers.
