It has three stripes. The stripes are green, white, and green. The green stands for agriculture. This means farming. The white stands for peace and unity.

Long ago, Nigeria was part of the British Empire. In 1958, a group started a contest. They wanted a new flag for the country. Many people entered the contest. Over 3,000 people sent in designs.

A man named Taiwo Akinkunmi won. His design was chosen. At first, it had a red sun. The group removed the sun later.

On October 1, 1960, Nigeria became independent. This means it was free. The new flag was raised for the first time that day. A soldier named David Ejoor raised it.

Before this, there were different flags. One flag had a blue field. It had a red disc on it. Now, the green and white flag is the official one. It represents the nation.
