It is dark green with a white stripe on the left side. In the middle, there is a white crescent moon and a five-pointed star. The green color represents the Muslim people of the country. The white stripe represents religious minorities, such as Hindus and Christians. The moon stands for progress. The star stands for light and knowledge.

This flag was chosen in 1947. That was the year Pakistan became independent from the British Empire. The design was based on the flag of the Muslim League. A team led by Syed Amir-uddin Kedwaii helped create the final design.

An earlier idea from 1942 had five stars instead of one. Each star in that old plan stood for a different part of the land.

People fly the flag on many special days. They fly it on Independence Day and Republic Day. It is also raised at schools and offices every morning. At the border, there is a big ceremony to raise and lower the flag. Many people come to watch this event.
