Long ago, Brazil had different flags. The old flags used green and yellow. These colors came from royal families. In 1889, Brazil became a republic. A group of people made the new flag. They wanted to keep the old colors. They replaced the old royal arms with the blue sky.

The stars on the flag are very special.

They show the sky over Rio de Janeiro. The stars represent the states of Brazil. The flag has 27 stars now. It had only 21 stars in 1889. When new states were made, more stars were added. For example, four stars were added in 1992. This keeps the flag up to date. Each star's size shows how big its state is.
