Diori helped Niger become free from France. He helped start a political party called the PPN. In 1960, he became the first president of Niger. He led the country for many years. He was a famous spokesman for Africa. Other nations asked him to help settle their fights.

But there were hard times in his rule. Some people said his government was corrupt. This means leaders were not being honest. A big drought caused a famine in the 1970s. This meant many people did not have enough food. People also felt he kept too much power for himself.

In 1974, a group of soldiers led a coup. A coup is when the military takes control. This ended Diori's time as president. His wife died during this event. Diori was put in prison for six years. He later lived in Morocco. He died there in 1989.
