It sits right next to the edge of Mexico City. The city is named after a famous king and poet named Nezahualcóyotl. His name comes from the Nahuatl language and means "fasting coyote."

You can see a coyote head on the city's symbol. This symbol shows a coyote with its tongue out and a royal necklace. The city is a very busy place where over one million people live. Many people moved here from other parts of Mexico to find new jobs.

This land was not always a city for people. Long ago, the area was under the waters of Lake Texcoco.

People worked for a long time to drain the lake. This started in the colonial period and continued for many years. By the 1930s, the lake was mostly drained to stop flooding. This created new land that the government eventually sold to people. As the land appeared, the first small neighborhoods began to form. These early groups grew into the large city we see today.

Building the city was a very big job. In the early days, the land lacked things like electricity and clean water.

In 1945, new projects like the Xochiaca dam helped bring water to people. This allowed the first formal neighborhoods to grow. By 1949, about 2,000 people lived in the area. The population grew very fast during the 1950s. In 1963, the area finally became its own independent municipality. This helped the city get better roads, lights, and sewers.

There are many interesting places to visit in the city.

Some people call it "Neza York" because it is so big and busy. In some neighborhoods, people still use donkey carts to collect trash. The city also has a history with youth gangs called cholos. These groups formed in the 1990s and often fight over territory. Many people from the city have also moved to the United States. Many of them now live in New York and share their culture there.
