geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Tlalnepantla de Baz is a large and busy place in Mexico. It sits in the State of Mexico, just north of Mexico City. The name comes from the Náhuatl words for "middle land." This name tells a story about how the city began. Long ago, two towns named Tenayuca and Teocalhueyacan had a dispute. They could not agree on where to build a new monastery. To solve the problem, leaders placed the building exactly in the middle. This monastery was named Corpus Christi and was built in 1550.

History in this region goes back a very long time. Around the 11th century, a leader named Xolotl led a group of people here. They were looking for better weather and more food. Xolotl even made the first census in the Americas. Later, the Aztec Empire conquered the land. After the Spanish arrived, the Franciscans helped spread their religion. The city grew much more during the time of Porfirio Díaz. In 1948, it was officially declared a city.
