Long ago, a river branch dried up. Because of this, the people moved their capital south to Khiva.

Many different people lived in this land. Some lived near the river to farm. Others were nomads who moved around. The people were ruled by a leader called a Khan. Different ruling families held power over time. One group was the Arabshahid family. Later, the Qongrat family became powerful.

In the 1800s, things began to change. Russia wanted to take control of the area. In 1873, Russia conquered Khiva. The kingdom became a protectorate. This means Russia helped rule the land.
