The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany. It is the tallest peak within the Wetterstein Mountains.

This massive mountain sits in the Northern Limestone Alps. The western summit marks the international border between Germany and Austria.

Because of this location, the massif belongs to the Bavarian state in Germany and the Tyrol state in Austria. The mountain rises just eleven kilometres southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is also less than six kilometres east of Ehrwald.

The geology of the Zugspitze tells a story of ancient oceans. The mountain is composed of sedimentary rocks from the Mesozoic era. These rocks were originally deposited on a seabed. The base consists of muschelkalk beds. The upper layers are made of Wetterstein limestone.

This limestone formed in a lagoon. Scientists know this because they find marine coralline algae within the stone. The rock varies in color from grey-white to light grey. Some areas even contain lead and zinc ore. These minerals were mined in the Höllental valley between 1827 and 1918.

The mountain's shape has changed significantly over time. Originally, the Zugspitze had three distinct peaks. These were the east, middle, and west summits. The east summit is the only one that remains in its original form. It is also the only peak entirely within German territory. The middle summit was lost in 1930 when a cable car station was built there. In 1938, the west summit was blown up. This was done to prepare a site for a Wehrmacht flight control room. However, that building was never actually constructed.

The climate on the Zugspitze is classified as tundra. This means it is very cold and harsh. The mountain is the first major high obstacle for the prevailing Westerlies. These winds push moist air against the mountain. This process is called the north barrier of the Alps. It causes the mountain to receive heavy precipitation.

In contrast, Föhn winds can blow from the south. These warm, dry air masses can cause unusually high temperatures for about 60 days each year. Frost dominates the peak for about 310 days per year. In 2009, the Zugspitze was recorded as the coldest place in Germany.

Ice plays a major role in the mountain's landscape. The Zugspitze hosts the two largest glaciers in Germany. These are the Northern Schneeferner, which covers 30.7 hectares, and the Höllentalferner, which covers 24.7 hectares.

The Southern Schneeferner was once a glacier as well. However, it shrank so much that it lost its glacier status in 2022. Below the summit lies the Zugspitzplatt. This is a high karst plateau located between 1,700 and 1,800 metres. It was shaped by glaciation and weathering. The plateau contains features like dolines and limestone pavements. Today, 52 percent of the plateau is covered in scree.

Human activity is very common on the mountain today. About 500,000 people visit the summit every year.

Visitors use three different cable cars to reach the top. The Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car was first built in 1926. A rack railway, the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway, also runs inside the northern flank.

This railway ends on the Zugspitzplatt. In the winter, nine ski lifts serve the area. There is also plenty of accommodation. The Münchner Haus sits on the western summit.

The Wiener-Neustädter Hut is located on the western slopes.

Life exists even in this high, rocky environment. On the Zugspitzplatt, about 400 sheep graze. The northern slopes, such as the Wettersteinwald, are very rich in plant species. You can find mountain pine up to 1,800 metres. Other plants include spruce and fir trees.

Colorful flowers like the alpine poppy and purple mountain saxifrage grow at great heights. You might also see the lady's slipper orchid in sheltered spots. Animals also call this place home. The alpine chough is one bird that lives in this high world.
