The Eiger is a massive limestone mountain located in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland.

It sits in the Bernese Oberland region within the canton of Bern. The mountain overlooks the valleys of Grindelwald to the north and Lauterbrunnen to the west. It is the easternmost peak of a famous ridge crest. This ridge includes the Mönch and the Jungfrau.

Together, these three peaks are often called the Ogre, the Monk, and the Virgin. This trio forms one of the most iconic sights in the entire Swiss Alps.

The mountain's physical structure is defined by its three distinct faces. The north face, known as the Eigerwand or Nordwand, is the most famous.

It is one of the largest sheer faces in Europe. It rises between 1,600 and 1,800 metres high. The east face is heavily covered by glaciers. One notable glacier is the Ischmeer, which means "Ice Sea." The west face is another major side of the mountain. The northeastern ridge, called the Mittellegi, is the longest ridge on the Eiger.

Water management on the mountain follows a specific path. All sides of the Eiger eventually feed the same river, the Lütschine. The southwestern face feeds the Weisse Lütschine through the Trümmelbach. The northwestern face feeds the Schwarze Lütschine through Grindelwald. The east face features the Ischmeer glacier. This glacier flows into the Lower Grindelwald Glacier system. Eventually, these waters meet in Zweilütschinen. There, they form the proper Lütschine river, which flows toward Lake Brienz.

Climbing history on the Eiger is filled with significant milestones. The first successful ascent of the summit occurred on August 11, 1858.

Charles Barrington, a man from Ireland, reached the top with Swiss guides Christian Almer and Peter Bohren. They used the west flank for their route. However, the north face remained a mystery for many decades. It was considered the "last problem" of the Alps. It was viewed as an incredibly dangerous and difficult challenge for mountaineers.

The north face was finally conquered on July 24, 1938.

An Austrian-German expedition of four men completed the climb. This group included Andreas Heckmair, Ludwig Vörg, Heinrich Harrer, and Fritz Kasparek. They used what is now called the "Heckmair route." During the climb, the team was caught in an avalanche while ascending a section called "The White Spider." This area features snow-filled cracks that look like spider legs. Despite the danger, all four men survived the ascent.

The Eiger is also known for its tragic history and difficult conditions. The north face has a reputation for being extremely deadly. Since 1935, at least 64 climbers have died attempting to climb it. This led to the German nickname "Mordwand," which means "murderous wall." This name is a pun on the correct name, "Nordwand." Today, climbers face challenges like increased rockfall and melting ice. Some experts now prefer climbing in winter. They believe the cold helps strengthen the crumbling face with ice.

Modern technology allows many people to experience the mountain safely. A railway tunnel actually runs through the interior of the Eiger.

This is part of the Jungfrau Railway line. The line connects Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch. The Jungfraujoch is the highest railway station in Europe. There are two stations located inside the mountain at about 3,000 metres. These are Eigerwand and Eismeer.

Visitors at Kleine Scheidegg can use telescopes to watch climbers. This creates a sharp contrast between mountain danger and railway comfort.

The Eiger is part of a larger, protected natural system. The Jungfrau-Aletsch area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. This area contains the highest summits and largest glaciers in the Bernese Alps. The mountain's massive limestone structure projects from the crystalline basement of the Mönch. This makes it a significant geological feature of the region. The Eiger remains a symbol of the power and beauty of the Swiss landscape.
