People often call them the Virgin, the Monk, and the Ogre.

The Eiger is known for its massive north face. This steep wall is made of rock and ice. It is the biggest north face in the Alps.

Some climbers call it the "murderous wall." This is because climbing it can be very dangerous. Since 1935, at least 64 climbers have died there. The first group to climb the north face reached the top in 1938.

You do not have to be a climber to see the mountain. A railway tunnel runs right through the Eiger.

The Jungfrau Railway has two stations inside the mountain. These stations are Eigerwand and Eismeer. They sit about 3,000 metres high. You can look out of windows carved into the rock. This lets you see the views from inside the mountain.
