It is a cape at the edge of the land. This spot is the westernmost point of mainland Europe. It is also the westernmost point of the Eurasian landmass. The cape sits in the Sintra Mountain Range. It is part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. You can find it in the municipality of Sintra. It is near a place called Azóia. The cape is 42 kilometres west of the city of Lisbon.

The land here looks very dramatic and wild. The western coast has sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. These cliffs are very tall. They rise more than 100 metres above the water. The cliffs are made of many types of hard rock. You can see granite and syenite in the area. There are also rocks called gabbro-diorite and volcanic breccia. Some parts show strong erosion from the ocean waves. Limestone is also found inside the granite in some spots. These rocks were shaped by many natural forces over time.

People have known about this place for a long time. The Romans called it Promontorium Magnum. During the Age of Sail, sailors called it the Rock of Lisbon. A lighthouse stands at the cape to help ships. This lighthouse started working in 1772. You can visit a monument at the site today. It has a stone plaque on it. This plaque marks the exact spot where the land ends.

The weather at the cape is shaped by the ocean. The sea keeps the temperatures very mild. Summers are cool and stable. There is very little rain in the summer. However, fog is very common during these months. This fog makes the air feel damp. July and August are the windiest months of the year. The average wind speed is about 13.8 km/h. Winters are rainy but the nights stay mild. The Sintra Mountains nearby get much more rain than the cape.

Plants and animals live along these cliffs too. Many birds stop to rest here. They use the cliffs and protected coves. Most plants are low to the ground. This helps them survive the wind and salt.

A plant called Carpobrotus edulis grows here now. It is a succulent that forms thick mats. Local people brought it to use as ground cover. Now, it is an invasive species. This means it has spread too much. It covers much of the land on the cape.
