It sits right above the city of Cape Town. The mountain has a very flat top called a plateau. This plateau is edged by steep, grey cliffs. To the east, you will find Devil's Peak. To the west, there is Lion's Head.

These peaks form a natural shape around the City Bowl. The mountain is part of a large sandstone range. This range forms the spine of the Cape Peninsula.

Sometimes, a special cloud covers the mountain top. People call this the "table cloth." This happens when a southeasterly wind blows up the slopes. The wind carries moisture into the colder air. This moisture then turns into clouds.

Some people tell a legend about this cloud. They say it comes from a smoking contest. The story involves the Devil and a pirate named Van Hunks. This makes the weather feel very magical.

The mountain has a very long history. Many years ago, Khoe-speaking clans lived on these lands. One group was known as the High Clan. In 1503, a man named António de Saldanha climbed the mountain. He used a path called Platteklip Gorge. This gorge is a direct way to the top. In 1865, Sir Thomas Maclear built a stone marker. This marker is called Maclear's Beacon. It marks the highest point on the plateau.

It blooms near waterfalls from January to March.

The rocks here tell a story of time. The top of the mountain is made of very hard sandstone. This rock is about 450 to 510 million years old.

Below the sandstone, there are maroon-colored mudstones. These rocks formed in shallow tidal flats a long time ago. The mountain is flat because it was once the floor of a valley. Over many years, softer rocks wore away. Only the hardest sandstone was left behind. This is how the flat table shape was made.
