In 1488, the explorer Bartolomeu Dias arrived from Europe. He first called the area the "Cape of Storms." Later, King John II of Portugal renamed it the "Cape of Good Hope." This was because it opened a sea path to the East Indies. In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck arrived to start a settlement. He worked for the Dutch East India Company. This settlement eventually grew into the city we know today.
