Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa. It serves as the seat of the Parliament of South Africa. This makes it a vital political center for the nation. The city is the oldest urban area in the Western Cape province. It is also the second-largest city in South Africa by population. Only Johannesburg is larger.

Human history in this region goes back a very long time. The earliest known remains of human occupation were found at Peers Cave. These were discovered in Fish Hoek during the late 1920s. In 1488, the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias reached the area. He named it the "Cape of Storms."

Later, King John II of Portugal renamed it the "Cape of Good Hope." This name reflected the optimism of finding a sea route to the East Indies. In 1510, the Portuguese faced the Goringhaiqua people at the Battle of Salt River. The Goringhaiqua were one of the Khoikhoi clans living there.

In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck arrived for the Dutch East India Company. He established a way-station to help ships traveling to the Dutch East Indies. This settlement eventually grew into a permanent colony. Because of a labor shortage, authorities imported enslaved people from Indonesia and Madagascar. These people are the ancestors of the Cape Coloured and Cape Malay communities. During this Dutch period, many new plants were introduced. Grapes, potatoes, apples, and citrus all arrived during this time. These crops had a lasting influence on the local economy.

The British period brought significant political changes. Britain first captured Cape Town in 1795. It was returned to the Dutch in 1803. However, British forces occupied the area again in 1806. Following the Napoleonic Wars, the city was permanently ceded to the United Kingdom in 1814. The city became the capital of the Cape Colony. In 1833, slavery was abolished in the colony. This act freed over 5,500 people in the city. By the end of the 19th century, the city was a major economic center.

Between 1891 and 1901, the population grew from 67,000 to 171,000.

The mid-twentieth century was a difficult era under apartheid. This was a system of racial segregation. The government passed the Group Areas Act in 1950. This law classified urban areas by race. Many multi-racial suburbs were destroyed. In 1965, the suburb of District Six was declared a whites-only area. Over 60,000 residents were forcibly removed from their homes.

Today, Cape Town is a major global destination. It has been named the best city in the world by several organizations. The New York Times named it a top city in 2014. Time Out named it the best city for travelers in 2025.
