Table Mountain is a massive, flat-topped mountain in South Africa.

It serves as a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town. The mountain is the northernmost part of a sandstone range. This range forms the spine of the Cape Peninsula. It stretches from the Cape of Good Hope in the south up to the mountain. The plateau is flanked by Devil's Peak to the east and Lion's Head to the west.

Together with Signal Hill, these heights form a natural amphitheatre. This shape surrounds the City Bowl and the Table Bay harbour.

The mountain's unique shape is a result of complex geological processes. Table Mountain is a syncline mountain. This means it was once the floor of a valley. The highest part of the original mountain folds, called an anticline, was to the east. Over time, weathering wore away that higher section. It also eroded the softer Malmesbury shale and granite basement. This erosion created the Cape Flats, which is the isthmus connecting the peninsula to the mainland.

The mountain's flatness comes from its hard rock layers. The top consists of very hard quartzitic sandstone. This is often called Table Mountain Sandstone or Peninsula Formation Sandstone. Originally, a softer layer of glacial tillite called the Pakhuis Formation sat on top. Because the sandstone is so resistant to erosion, it remained as a flat platform.

The layers of the mountain tell a story of ancient environments. The upper part of the mesa consists of rocks from the Ordovician period. These rocks are between 450 and 510 million years old. They belong to the two lowest layers of the Cape Fold Mountains. Below the sandstone lies the Graafwater Formation. This layer consists of maroon-colored mudstones. These rocks formed in shallow tidal flats. They contain some Ordovician fossils and fossil tracks.

The Graafwater rocks rest on a basement of Cape Granite. These basement rocks are much older than the sandstone. They date back to the late Precambrian era. The granite and Malmesbury shales form the gentler, lower slopes of the range.

Weather plays a huge role in the mountain's appearance. A famous phenomenon is the formation of orographic clouds.

These clouds form when a southeasterly wind hits the slopes. The wind pushes moisture up into the colder air. The moisture then condenses to form a thick cloud layer. This is often called the "table cloth." Local legend says this cloud comes from a smoking contest. The story involves the Devil and a pirate named Van Hunks. The cloud is said to symbolize their contest.

Table Mountain National Park is a vital area for biodiversity. It is the most visited national park in South Africa. About 4.2 million people visit every year. The area contains an unusually rich variety of life. There are an estimated 2,285 plant species in the peninsula range. Around 1,500 of these species are found within the 57 km² area of Table Mountain and the Back Table. This number is as large as all the plant species in the United Kingdom.

Many of these plants are endemic. This means they are found nowhere else on Earth.

The vegetation is dominated by Cape fynbos. Fynbos is a type of thick, fire-adapted bush. Most of the plants are Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos. Other types include Peninsula Granite Fynbos and Peninsula Shale Renosterveld. Some areas also contain Afromontane forest.

Fynbos requires regular fires to stay healthy and diverse. These fires have been part of the landscape for at least 12,000 years. Humans have used fire to manage the land for centuries. One beautiful example is the Disa uniflora orchid.

History and exploration are tied to the mountain's landscape. The lands were formerly inhabited by Khoe-speaking clans. One such group was the High Clan. In 1503, António de Saldanha made the first recorded ascent. He used Platteklip Gorge, which is a direct route to the summit. The summit's highest point is Maclear's Beacon.

This is a stone cairn built in 1865. Sir Thomas Maclear built it for a trigonometrical survey. The plateau rises about 1,000 m above the city. Hiking the steep, rocky pathways requires significant fitness and equipment.
