Later, the Nguni people occupied the region. In 1497, the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama sailed past this coast. He arrived during the Christmas season. Because of this, he named the area Natal, which means "Christmas" in Portuguese.

In 1686, a Dutch ship named the Stavenisse was wrecked nearby. The survivors were taken in by the Abambo people. This tribe was led by Chief Langalibalele. In 1689, the Dutch Cape Colony purchased the Bay of Natal from the Abambo people for £1,650.

Modern Durban began to take shape through British trade. In 1824, English traders Francis Farewell and Henry Fynn established a trading post. They worked with a company called J. R. Thompson & Co. Fynn helped King Shaka, the Zulu king, recover from a stab wound. In gratitude, Shaka granted the traders land around the bay.
