It is the fourth largest province in South Africa. It covers about 10.6% of the country's total land. It is roughly the size of England.

Nature has made this land very diverse. Most of the province sits in the Cape Fold Belt. These are sandstone mountains that formed millions of years ago.

Much of this area is covered in Fynbos. Fynbos is made of shrubs and many flowering plants. Table Mountain has as many plant species as the whole United Kingdom. In some wet areas, you can find Afromontane forests. These forests have very tall trees like Yellowwood and Ironwood. The dry Karoo area has different plants that do not need much water.

Weather in the Western Cape can change quickly. This happens because of the mountains and the ocean. Two ocean currents affect the water. The Agulhas Current is warm. The Benguela Current is cold.
