It sits entirely inside the Shiga Prefecture. This area is in the west-central part of Honshu island. The lake is located northeast of Kyoto, which was once the capital city. It is a very ancient place. Scientists think the lake is over 4 million years old. This makes it the 13th oldest lake on our planet. Because it is so close to Kyoto, many old poems and stories mention it.

The name of the lake tells a story about its shape. People call it Biwa-ko. This name was used during the Edo period. Many believe the lake looks like a biwa. A biwa is a traditional stringed instrument. A monk named Kōsō wrote about this in the 14th century. He said the goddess Benzaiten lives on Chikubu Island. He believed the lake was shaped like her favorite instrument. The lake was also called Omi in the past.

Water flows in and out of the lake in a special way. Small rivers from nearby mountains flow into the water. The main way water leaves is through the Seta River. This river eventually joins others to become the Yodo River. The Yodo River flows into Osaka Bay. Lake Biwa is very important for people living nearby. It provides drinking water for about 15 million people. It also helps local textile factories and cities like Kyoto and Otsu.

Many unique living things call this lake home. There are more than 1,000 different species of animals and plants there. About 5,000 waterbirds visit the lake every year. Many fish are found here that do not live anywhere else.

One famous fish is the giant Lake Biwa catfish. It is the largest predator in the lake. There are also many types of snails and clams. Some fish, like the Biwa trout, are also unique to this water. However, foreign fish like black bass have caused some trouble for the local species.

People have lived near Lake Biwa for a very long time. Archaeologists found the Awazu site near the southern end. This site is a shell midden from the Jomon period. It dates back to around 9300 BCE. People there used plants and animals for food. They even learned how to eat horse chestnuts safely. Today, people visit the lake for fun and learning. They can go to the Lake Biwa Museum or visit beautiful beaches. The lake remains a vital part of Japan's nature and history.
