It sits in a basin between several mountain ranges. The Lake Range is to the east, and the Virginia Mountains are to the west. The Pah Rah Range sits to the southwest. This lake is the largest remaining part of an ancient inland sea. That huge sea was called Lake Lahontan.

It covered much of western Nevada at the end of the last ice age.

The water in the lake comes from the Truckee River. This river flows from Lake Tahoe and enters the lake at its southern end.

The river brings silt and cloudy water into the lake. Pyramid Lake is an endorheic lake. This means water only leaves by evaporation or by seeping under the ground. The water is salty, but not as salty as the ocean. Its salt level is about one-sixth of sea water. It holds much more water than the Great Salt Lake.

People have lived near this lake for a very long time. Archeologists found tools and clothing from people living there as far back as 9500 B.C.E. The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe lives on the land around the lake. They have special names for it in their own language. One name refers to the Cui-ui fish. The Washo people also have a name for it. Their name means "trout lake."

The lake is famous for its unique rock shapes. These are called tufa formations. They dot the shores and look like strange towers.

An explorer named John C. Frémont gave the lake its English name. He saw a large rock that looked like a bent pyramid. One big island is called Anaho Island. It is home to many American white pelicans. Some areas of the lake are closed to visitors to protect sacred sites.

Many special fish live in these waters. The Cui-ui fish lives only in this lake. The Lahontan cutthroat trout is also found here. This trout is one of the largest inland trout in the world.

In 1905, a dam was built to move water for farming. This caused the lake level to drop very low. The fish almost disappeared, but people worked hard to save them. Today, many fish are being released back into the lake.
