Lake Mead is a huge reservoir in the Southwestern United States.

It sits in the states of Nevada and Arizona, just east of Las Vegas. This massive body of water was created by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. It is the largest reservoir in the country when you look at how much water it can hold. The lake provides water for nearly 20 million people. It also helps supply water to large areas of farmland in Arizona, California, and Nevada. Some of this water even reaches into Mexico.

The lake is made of several different parts called basins. The largest part near the dam is known as the Boulder Basin. A narrow channel called The Narrows connects this to the Virgin Basin. Other areas include Temple Basin and Gregg Basin. The water comes mostly from snow melting in the Rocky Mountains. This snowmelt flows down the Colorado River into the lake. The Glen Canyon Dam sits upstream and helps manage how much water flows in.

Long ago, the area was home to native Americans called Ancestral Puebloans. When the dam was built, many old sites were covered by the rising water. One famous site is called the "Lost City." The lake is named after Elwood Mead. He was a leader at the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1924 to 1936.

During the planning of the project, an engineer named Lloyd Joseph Hudlow helped manage the work. In 1936, the area became a recreation zone for the National Park Service. It was later renamed the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in 1947.

Water levels in the lake change quite a bit. In 1983, the lake began staying below its full capacity. This happened because of droughts and people using more water. By May 2022, the water was at only 30% of its full capacity.

When the water gets very low, you can see a white line on the rocks. This white mark is made of minerals left behind by the water. Sometimes the water is so low that old towns like St. Thomas appear. You can visit these ruins by walking on a dirt road or hiking trail.

Managing the water is a very important job. If the level falls too low, the government might have to limit how much water people use. This is called water rationing. To help, engineers added new parts to the Hoover Dam in 2015 and 2016. These new turbines help the dam make electricity even when the water is low.

People also spend money on things like new water tunnels. This helps make sure cities like Las Vegas always have enough water to drink.
