Lake Toba is a massive natural lake in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

It sits inside a caldera, which is a large hole left by a volcano. This lake is the largest in Indonesia. It is also the largest volcanic lake in the entire world.

The lake is about 100 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide. It can be up to 500 meters deep. The surface of the lake sits at about 900 meters above sea level. It is such a special place that it is a UNESCO Global Geopark.

This huge lake was formed by a supervolcano. A supervolcano is a volcano that has a very large and powerful eruption. About 74,000 years ago, the Toba supervolcano had a massive explosion. This event was a VEI 8 eruption, which is a way to measure how big an eruption is. During this time, a huge amount of material was released. This included ignimbrite, which is a type of rock made from volcanic flows. The ground collapsed after the blast, and water filled the hole to create the lake.

Scientists have studied this eruption for a long time. In 1998, Stanley H. Ambrose proposed the Toba catastrophe theory. He suggested the eruption might have caused a global population bottleneck. A bottleneck is when a population becomes very small. He thought the eruption could have left only a few tens of thousands of humans alive. However, many newer studies now cast doubt on this idea. They found no evidence of a lasting drop in human or animal numbers. Some scientists believe changes in how humans moved might explain the DNA patterns instead.

There are many interesting facts about the geology here. The magma reservoir, or the place where melted rock stays underground, is very large. It is made of stacked layers called magma sills. These sills sit beneath Samosir Island in the center of the lake. This reservoir is much larger than the magma chamber under Yellowstone.

The island of Samosir itself is a resurgent dome. This means the ground pushed upward after the eruption. Samosir has risen by at least 300 meters since the big blast.

Today, many people live around the beautiful lake. Most of them belong to the Batak people.

You can see their unique houses with roofs that curve like boats. The area is filled with tropical rainforests and pine forests. You might see different kinds of fish in the water, like the Batak fish. People use ferry boats to travel across the water.
