Lake Toba is a massive natural lake located in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

It occupies the caldera of the Toba supervolcano. A caldera is a large crater formed when a volcano collapses. This lake is the largest in Indonesia. It is also the largest volcanic lake on Earth. The lake is about 100 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide. It reaches depths of up to 500 meters. Its surface sits at an elevation of about 900 meters. Because of its unique features, it is a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The lake was formed by a massive volcanic event. About 74,000 years ago, the Toba supervolcano erupted. This was a VEI 8 eruption. VEI stands for Volcanic Explosivity Index, which measures the size of an explosion. This was the largest known explosive eruption on Earth in the last 25 million years. During the eruption, a huge amount of material was released. This included about 2,800 cubic kilometers of ignimbrite. Ignimbrite is a type of rock formed from volcanic flows. The eruption also released massive amounts of ash. Some ash fell as far as South Asia.

Scientists have debated the global effects of this eruption. In 1998, Stanley H. Ambrose proposed the Toba catastrophe theory. He suggested the eruption caused a global population bottleneck. A bottleneck occurs when a population size drops significantly. He believed human numbers fell to only a few tens of thousands. This would have reduced human genetic diversity worldwide. However, many modern studies now doubt this theory. Researchers found no evidence of lasting reductions in human or animal populations. They suggest that human migration patterns might explain genetic changes instead. Some studies even show that a volcanic winter did not follow the eruption.

The geology of the Toba caldera is quite complex. It is made of four overlapping volcanic craters. The Toba caldera is the world's largest Quaternary caldera. This refers to the current geological period. The magma reservoir beneath the volcano is very large. It consists of stacked layers called magma sills. These sills extend beneath Samosir Island in the center of the lake. This reservoir is more than four times larger than Lake Superior. It is also larger than the magma chamber under Yellowstone. This structure may have driven past supereruptions.

Samosir Island is a notable part of the lake. It was formed by a resurgent dome. A resurgent dome happens when the ground pushes upward after an eruption. This happens because of the pressure from magma below. Samosir Island has risen by at least 300 meters since the major eruption. Other volcanic features are also visible in the water. There are at least four cones and three craters in the lake. The Tandukbenua cone is on the northwestern edge. It has very little vegetation. This suggests it is only a few hundred years old. The Pusukbukit volcano is also active on the south edge.

Many people live around the shores of Lake Toba. Most residents belong to the Batak ethnic group. The Batak people are known for their distinctive houses. These houses have roofs that curve upward like boat hulls. The surrounding landscape is filled with tropical rainforests. You can also find Sumatran tropical pine forests on higher mountains. The lake is oligotrophic, meaning it has few nutrients. Because of this, native fish populations are quite small. One local species is the Batak fish. This fish is currently threatened by pollution and deforestation.

Modern life in the region relies on the lake for travel. Ferry boats are used to move people and goods.

Parapat is a major transit point for travelers. It connects people to Samosir Island. The area is also prone to earthquakes. Large earthquakes have occurred near the lake in 1892 and 1987. The volcano sits near the Great Sumatran fault. This fault is part of a larger system where tectonic plates move. The Indo-Australian plate is sliding under the Eurasian plate. This movement makes the entire region very geologically active.
