North Sumatra is a major province located in the northern part of Sumatra island in Indonesia.

It is the third-largest province by area on the island, sitting behind South Sumatra and Riau. The province is bordered by Aceh to the northwest and Riau to the southeast. To the south lies West Sumatra, while the Indian Ocean meets the western coast. The eastern side borders the Strait of Malacca, which creates a maritime boundary with Malaysia.

The capital and largest city is Medan, located on the east coast. As of 2020, the population was approximately 14.8 million people. By mid-2025, estimates suggest it will reach 15.8 million. This growth of about 200,000 people every year makes it Indonesia's fourth most populous province. It is also the most populous province outside of Java Island.

A defining feature of the landscape is the Toba supervolcano.

This volcano underwent a massive eruption roughly 74,000 to 75,000 years ago. Scientists classify this event as a VEI-8 eruption, which is the highest level on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. This supereruption was so powerful that it nearly wiped out all of humanity. The geological process of this eruption eventually created Lake Toba.

Today, the lake sits in the massive caldera left behind by the volcano. The region also contains other active volcanic features, such as Mount Sinabung.

The history of the region begins in the prehistoric era. Archaeological evidence suggests that the earliest populations may have been Austronesian or Melanesian. These groups dispersed during the Mesolithic era, also known as the Middle Stone Age.

Early inhabitants primarily consumed snails and clams. They left behind large shell deposits, often called kitchen waste, along the Deli-Langkat shore and riverbanks. Later, the Deutero Malays settled along the coasts. They lived in villages near large rivers like the Besitang, Wampu, Asahan, and Barumun. These villages often grew into important centers of government at river mouths.

Linguistic and genetic research provides more detail about the people. Austronesian speakers likely reached Sumatra from Taiwan and the Philippines about 2,500 years ago. These settlers are believed to be the ancestors of the Batak people.

Genetic studies involving 440 Nias people show DNA similarities to Taiwanese and Filipino populations. This research suggests Nias ancestors may have arrived even earlier, between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago. On Nias Island, the people maintained unique traditions, including large stone memorials called Darodaro.

During the early historic era, North Sumatra became a hub for international trade. The eastern coast saw many visitors from China and India.

The western coast, specifically the port of Barus, was famous for camphor. This substance was highly valued and even reached Ancient Egypt. Various kingdoms rose to power during this time. The Aru Kingdom was a maritime power on the east coast from the 13th to the 16th century.

In the central highlands, the Batak people lived in independent kingdoms. The Bakkara kingdom held significant influence due to its status as a cultural origin point.

The colonial era brought significant political and social shifts. The Dutch East India Company controlled Malacca after 1641, affecting local trade. Later, the Dutch government formalized control over North Sumatra through international treaties.

In the 19th century, the Dutch expanded tobacco plantations on the east coast. To support these plantations, they imported large numbers of laborers from Java, Southern China, and Southern India. This migration created the diverse ethnic makeup seen today. The Batak people also faced Dutch expansion, leading to a 30-year guerrilla war led by Sisingamangaraja XII.

World War II and the path to independence marked the final major historical transition. Japanese forces landed in North Sumatra in March 1942 and captured Medan.

The Japanese occupation lasted for three years. Following Japan's surrender in 1945, Sukarno proclaimed Indonesian independence. This triggered a four-year war of independence against the Dutch. In the years following, a social revolution occurred in East Sumatra in 1946. This period saw the overthrow of many local sultanates.

Today, the province remains a vital part of Indonesia's social and economic landscape.
