The city is located near the Strait of Malacca. It is also a semi-enclave within the Deli Serdang Regency. This means the regency surrounds the city on three sides. The geography of the area helped the city grow. A natural harbor exists where the Deli and Babura rivers meet. This harbor connects the land to the sea.

The economy of North Sumatra relies heavily on Medan. About 60% of the regional economy comes from trade and agriculture. There are 4 million acres of palm oil plantations in the area. These plantations provide products for processing and export. The city also serves as a gateway through major transport links. The Port of Belawan handles maritime trade. Kualanamu International Airport handles air travel.

These connections make Medan a vital multicultural metropolis. It is one of the four main central cities in Indonesia. The other three are Jakarta, Surabaya, and Makassar.

Medan has a very large and growing population. It is the most populous city in Indonesia outside of Java. As of mid-2024, the official population was 2,486,283 people. This number includes 1,237,602 males and 1,248,681 females. Projections suggest the population will reach 2,498,293 by mid-2025. When you include the surrounding urban area, the population exceeds 3.4 million. This makes it the fourth largest urban area in Indonesia. The Medan metropolitan area includes Binjai and Deli Serdang Regency. It also includes part of Karo Regency. This large metropolitan area had 4,944,979 residents in mid-2024.

The history of Medan begins with a small village. A Karonese man named Guru Patimpus founded the settlement. He lived in the 16th century and converted to Islam. He married the Princess of Deli and founded the village. At first, the area was called Kampung Medan Putri. The village sat between the Deli and Babura rivers. In 1632, the Aceh Sultanate expanded into the area. Later, the Deli Sultanate became independent from Aceh in 1669.

Many archaeological sites remain from this early history. These include Kota Rentang and the Benteng Putri Hijau fort ruins.

In the late 19th century, Medan changed rapidly. Dutch colonial authorities wanted new areas for plantations. They chose Medan and Deli as hubs for the Deli Company. Merchants like Jacob Nienhuys moved their business from Java to Deli. This started a massive tobacco trade. The trade grew even more after the Suez Canal opened in 1869. Medan became so wealthy it was called "the land of the money." The Deli Railway was built to ship goods. It carried tobacco, rubber, tea, timber, palm oil, and sugar. The railway moved these products to the Port of Belawan for export.

The city has seen many different rulers and eras. Sultan Ma'mun Al Rashid Perkasa Alamyah moved the capital to Medan. He built the Maimun Palace in 1888 and the Great Mosque in 1907. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied the city. They stayed until their surrender in 1945. After the war, Medan became part of the Republic of Indonesia. This happened following the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence. The city also faced the Battle of Medan between Allied troops and the Indonesian Army. Later, the 1970s saw growth from palm oil and rubber. This brought many migrants to the city.
