They call their land Bumi Minangkabau. This name means Land of Minangkabau. The name comes from a legend in the Tambo. The story says a foreign kingdom tried to conquer the area. To avoid war, the locals proposed a cattle race. The foreigners sent a large, aggressive bull. The locals sent a small, breastfeeding calf. The calf thought the big bull was its mother. It ran to the bull to find milk. In doing so, it tore the bull's stomach open. This victory led to the name "Manang kabau," or winning cattle.

History in this region stretches back thousands of years. The Minang community is part of the Deutro-Malay group. They likely migrated from Southern China. This happened around 2,500 to 2,000 years ago. They moved along the Kampar River into the highlands. These highlands are called the darek. The darek areas formed groups known as luhak. These included Luhak Tanah Data, Luhak Agam, and Luhak Limopuluah Koto. Many small kingdoms once existed here. They were often under the influence of larger powers like the Malayu Kingdom.

Powerful leaders shaped the political landscape. Adityawarman founded the Pagaruyung Kingdom in 1347.

He held the title of Maharajadiraja. This title showed his strength in central Sumatra. Hindu-Buddhist influences were present during his reign. You can still see this in temples like Muara Takus. Later, the French explorer Jean Parmentier arrived around 1523. Eventually, the Dutch Empire colonized the region. They called it the residency of Sumatra's West Coast. This administrative area once included parts of Riau and Jambi.

Religion has played a massive role in local culture. Islam is the predominant religion today. About 97.4% of the population follows Islam.

The influence of Islam grew after the 14th century. It became very strong in the Pagaruyung Kingdom by the 16th century. Travelers from Aceh and Malacca helped spread these teachings. The first Islamic king was Sultan Alif. This led to a new way of life. People followed the proverb "Adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi Kitabullah." This means Minangkabau custom is based on Islam. Islam itself is based on the Qur'an. However, this shift caused tension. A conflict called the Padri War broke out between religious leaders and traditional chiefs. The Dutch also joined this war.

West Sumatra connects many different historical threads. It links ancient Malay migrations to modern Indonesian life. It shows how different religions can shape a society. The region moved from Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms to Islamic sultanates. It also moved from local rule to Dutch colonial administration. Today, the Minangkabau people maintain a unique matrilineal culture. This distinguishes them from many other Malay groups. Their history is a mix of legend, migration, and changing empires. It remains a vital part of the Indonesian archipelago.
