This lake is the largest in Indonesia. It is also the largest volcanic lake on Earth.

A supervolcano made this place. A supervolcano is a very powerful volcano. About 74,000 years ago, it had a giant blast. This was one of the biggest eruptions ever. It sent out huge amounts of ash. This ash covered parts of South Asia. Some people think this caused a volcanic winter. This is a time when the world gets much colder.

The eruption changed the land. The ground collapsed and filled with water. This created the lake we see today. An island sits in the middle of the water. This is Samosir Island. It was formed by a resurgent dome. A resurgent dome is a part of the ground that rises up.
