Supervolcano

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A supervolcano is a very large volcano. It has an eruption with a VEI of 8. VEI stands for the volcanic explosivity index. This is a scale used to measure how big an eruption is. An 8 is the largest value on this scale.

These eruptions happen in a special way. Hot liquid rock called magma rises up from deep inside Earth. Sometimes the magma cannot break through the crust. The crust is the hard outer layer of our planet. The magma builds up in a large pool. Pressure grows in this pool until the crust breaks.

Supervolcanoes can look different than normal volcanoes. Instead of a cone shape, they often form a caldera. A caldera is a large, circular hole in the ground. This happens when the ground collapses into the empty magma pool.

These events can change the world. They can let out so much ash that the air changes. This can even lead to a small ice age. Such changes can make it hard for many species to survive. One big eruption happened at Lake Toba in Indonesia. It was the largest eruption in 25 million years.
