geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Samosir is a large volcanic island. It sits in Lake Toba. This lake is in Sumatra, Indonesia. A supervolcano made the lake and island. This happened 75,000 years ago.

Samosir is a very special place. It is the largest island within an island. It is also the fourth largest lake island in the world. The island has two smaller lakes inside it. These are Lake Sidihoni and Lake Aek Tao.

Many people visit Samosir to see the views. You can see the Uluan Peninsula across the water. You can also see a huge hill. This hill is near a Lutheran church.

The island is the center of Batak culture. You can see many Toba Batak houses there. These are called rumah adat. Most visitors stay in the small town of Tuktuk. You can take a one-hour ferry to get there. The boat starts from the town of Parapat. Long ago, a thin strip of land joined the island to the mainland. Now, a canal and a bridge connect them.
